BMW’s 1-series is getting a line of accessories for the first time, to be revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week. The accessories further promote the modern and sporty components of the model.

For the interior, velour edged floor mats are available in a range of color options. A luggage compartment tray can be added, along with ski and snowboard bags with plenty of colors and materials to choose from.

Bicycle racks come with room for two bikes and access to the luggage compartment, and have been designed to be light.

BMW also took weight reduction into consideration with new alloy wheels and in the new Performance an aerodynamics package, which also comes with a lighter breaking system.

The BMW Performance power kit for the 135i and 335i kick power up by 20hp, as well.

The new 2012 BMW 1-Series with the codename F20 has been unveiled. The 1-er is now both longer and wider, and rides on a longer wheelbase as well, which should hopefully translate into better interior space.

Wheelbase has grown by 30mm so it now stands at 2,690mm, which is just 10mm shorter than the current generation Honda Civic sold in Malaysia, because of the car’s short overhangs and aft of front axle engine placement, most of the wheelbase is actually in the area between the wheel and the door.

The car is also wider by 17mm. Front track has been increased by 51mm and the rear track by 72mm. Ride height remains unchanged at 1,421mm. The rear seats have 21mm more legroom, while the luggage area is 30 liter larger, now standing at 360 liters before the rear seats are folded down. The car remains rear wheel drive.

There are a few engine variants announced at launch time, though I suspect the F20 1-Series will not be limited to these engines only. There are two petrols, both powered by 1.6 liter inline-4 twin scroll turbocharged engines with Valvetronic, Double VANOS and direct injection. The 116i makes 136hp at 4,400rpm, with a peak torque of 220Nm between 1,350rpm to 4,300rpm. The more powerful 118i makes 170hp at 4,800rpm and peak torque of 250Nm between 1,500 to 4,500rpm.

The remaining three engine options are all based on a 2.0 liter inline-4 diesel engine. The baseline is the 116d, making 116hp at 4,000rpm and 260Nm of torque between 1,750 to 2,500rpm. The mid-range is the 118d making 143hp at 4,000rpm and 320Nm of torque between 1,750rpm to 2,500rpm.

The most powerful engine in the range so far is the 120d’s engine, which has similar specs to the 2.0L diesel engine in the 320d, 520d, X1, X3, etc. It makes a full 184 horsepower at 4,000rpm and a peak torque of 380Nm between 1,750rpm and 2,750rpm. This is the most powerful F20 1-er so far, and also accelerates to 100km/h the fastest in just 7.2 seconds. I’m pretty sure a petrol 128i with the new N20B20 2.0L turbo 4 cylinder will take the most powerful F20 crown later though.

All engines come by default with a 6-speed manual, but there is an optional 8-speed automatic transmission. Both manual and auto transmissions have Automatic Start/Stop as standard. There’s also a switch near the gear lever that you can use to activate an ECO PRO mode, which supposedly tunes various parameters to allow better fuel efficiency – this probably means more efficient throttle mapping and quicker upshifts.

BMW has launched the car with two different trim levels – the Sport Line and the Urban Line. This is something unusual, since we’re used to BMWs being either standard, M Sport or further customizable with BMW Individual.

The Sport Line (the red car you see here) and Urban Line (the blue car) has different front and rear bumpers, and the Sport Line gets some additional red stripes on the interior and even on its key fob. Even the front grille is different, with the Urban Line getting a chrome grille with silver-coloured slats (like the one on the F10 550i), while the Sport Line gets a chrome grille with black slats.

BMW has also allowed buyers to tick some more upmarket options on the spec sheet when ordering, such as high-beam assistance, parking assistance, a reverse camera, Lane Departure Warning, Collision Warning, BMW ConnectedDrive, and etc.

The ActiveE is the production version of BMW's 2010 Detroit Motor Show EV concept of the same name and it will share the limelight with the Vision CD Roadster study at the Bavarian firm's Geneva Salon stand. BMW plans to build a test fleet of more than 1,000 units of the fully electric version of the 1-Series Coupe, and lease them to select customers in the USA, Europe and China. The ActiveE will serve as a test bed for technologies that will be incorporated into the into BMW's future electric models such as the Megacity EV, due in 2013.

Power comes from an electric synchronous motor that produces 168HP (125 kW) and 250 Nm of torque, good enough to propel the 1 Series Coupe from standstill to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 9 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 90 mph (145 km/h). The electric motor draws power from three lithium-ion batteries, which replace the engine, transmission and fuel tank.

To increase the driving range, the electric motor also acts as a generator every time the driver takes his foot off the accelerator pedal. The recuperated kinetic energy is fed back into the batteries and the system also creates torque to slow down the car. BMW estimates that this way the autonomy can be extended by up to 20%.

Additionally, the ActiveE also has a “gliding mode”, in which the car is moved just by its own kinetic energy, and an Eco Pro mode that lowers the energy consumption of the heating and air conditioning system, while the accelerator uses less power with the same travel.

The EV can be charged in five hours using a 32-ampere wall box or overnight from a conventional household socket.

BMW 1-Series M Coupe Wallpaper

This is the hottest version of the 1-Series that has been a long time coming. Called the 1-Series M Coupe, it’s clear (from the posed images) that BMW sees it as the spiritual successor to the original E30 BMW M3, as they’re closer in size (just 33 mm longer but much wider), and the M3 has grown greatly through the years.

The M Coupe is powered by the twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-6 from the Z4 sDrive35is, making this the first car by M division that uses a standard production engine. The all-aluminum N54 engine puts out 335 hp at 5,900 rpm and 450 Nm of torque from 1,500 to 4,500 rpm. An overboost function adds 50 Nm at full pelt. Redline is at 7,000 rpm.

The fastest One does 0-100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds on to a 250 km/h limited top speed. A close ratio 6-speed manual gearbox transfers drive to the rear wheels. As comparison, the 420 PS M3 Coupe (with DCT) sold here does the century sprint in 4.6 seconds, so the gap is just three tenths of a second.

To stop the car, the 1,495 kg M Coupe’s brakes are M3 grade, says BMW. The internally-vented, cross-drilled cast iron discs measure 360 mm in diameter up front and 350 mm at the back. Each disc is connected to a floating aluminum hub by cast-in stainless-steel pins to reduce heat. The condition of the brake linings can be checked from the dash display. The wheels look familiar? They are 19-inch items from the M3 Competition Package and M3 GTS, wrapped with 245/35 rubber up front and 265/35 rear tyres.

The aluminum suspension on the M Coupe was “originally conceived for the current-generation M3″ and tuned specifically for this application. The front struts, swivel bearings, central subframe and an additional thrust panel below the engine (to maximize lateral stiffness) are all in aluminum, as are the dampers. Front/rear weight balance is 51.7/48.3.

The M Coupe is fitted with a variable M differential lock. This generates lock-up torque on-demand and variably to provide optimum traction. The DSC includes ABS, ASC, Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), hill-hold assistant, Cornering Brake Control (CBC), a brake fade compensation function and a brake drying function. For raising the intervention threshold, M Dynamic Mode (MDM) “enables slight amounts of dynamic oversteer under specific circumstances”. BMW says that this mode gives the fastest laptimes, but one can still fully switch DSC off (ABS remains on).

There’s also a M Drive button on the steering wheel that we first saw in the 2006 M5. Pressing it activates a razor-sharp throttle response program.

Looks wise, the front is dominated by three large air intakes. The central one is covered by a honeycomb grille while the two outer intakes are left completely open. The right one feeds air directly to the engine oil cooler and the left hole supplies the supplemental coolant radiator. On the sides, you’ll find trademark M chrome gills and wing mirrors that have the same shape as the M3′s. The rear end sports a lip spoiler, side openings on the bumper and quad pipes – two on each side. The front and rear lamps have slight changes too – LED eyebrows for the Adaptive Xenons and L-shaped rear elements.

If you’re wondering, this car is 5mm longer and 53 mm wider than a 135i Coupe. The tracks are 71 mm wider up front and 46 mm wider in the rear. Widened fenders and rear quarter panels were needed to accommodate the tracks. There’s no option of a moon roof, which saves 15 kg and lowers the centre of gravity.

The 1 Series M Coupe comes with Air Curtains, which were previewed on the Vision EfficientDynamics concept from Frankfurt 2009 and used here for the first time in a production car. It works to improve air flow around the wheel arches and significantly reduces turbulence. AC consists of openings in the outer section of the lower front fascia that route high-pressure air through ducts at each front corner.

The ducts (approximately 10 x 3 cm wide) are designed to channel air to openings at the front of each wheel arch, where it is discharged through a very narrow opening at high speed. This air stream covers the side of the front wheels like a curtain, reducing turbulence. There’s no Air Curtain for the rear wheels, and the rear openings are for style.

Lastly, the cabin is in dark Alcantara with orange contrast stitching covering the door panels, door pulls, instrument cluster binnacle, dash panel, and gearshift and handbrake lever boots. You’ll also get an M-specific instrument cluster with gray dials, red pointers and white backlighting. More M logos can be found on the driver’s footrest and door sills.
