At the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi unveiled the R8 e-tron Concept. The Audi R8 e-tron received a lot of attention with stellar technical specs that include four electric motors – two each at the front and rear axles – producing 313-hp and a maximum torque of 3,319 lb-ft of torque (501.5 lb-ft in real world terms). That allows it to run from 0 to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds with a top speed of 124 mph. Driving range of the R8 e-tron comes in at 154 miles on a full charge.

In June 2010, Audi quattro GmbH in Neckarsulm was chosen to produce the R8 e-tron as a small-series production. A year later the R8 e-tron won the Silvretta E-Auto Rally. The two-seater beat 23 other electric cars in the three-day race covering 104 miles.

Specially qualified engineers are borrowing from the series production of the successful Audi R8 mid-engine sports car as they assemble the R8 e-tron at the development workshop and are now providing us an inside-look at the production of the first electric-car from Audi.

“With the R8 e-tron, we are showing how inspiring electric mobility can be. Every system in this car has been tuned for maximum performance and range,” says Franciscus van Meel, Head of Electric Mobility Strategy at AUDI AG. “The R8 e-tron is a very important project for Audi because the competence and experience we glean from it will later flow into the large volume production of electric automobiles.” The expectation is that e-tron will become a synonym for advanced electric mobility, just as the term “quattro” today stands for pioneering all-wheel drive. “We want to be the leading premium manufacturer of electric vehicles by 2020,” says van Meel.

Audi said that it is investing more than €5 billion in the two German sites at Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm between 2011 and 2015 for the development of new vehicles and into future technologies such as electric and hybrid drive systems.

Audi will build only 1,000 units of the R8 e-tron, which will go on sale in select markets by the end of 2012 (U.S. is one of them).

This Spyder is a open-top version of the R8 GT unveiled last year, so it has 560 hp and 540 Nm of torque, as opposed to the “standard” R8 V10′s 525 hp/530 Nm. 0-100 km/h is done in 3.8 seconds on its way to a 317 km/h top speed.

It’s not just more power, though. At 1,640 kg, the R8 GT Spyder is 85 kg lighter than its base car, the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro and just 15 kg heavier than the R8 GT. The Audi Space Frame (ASF) body, consisting of cast nodes, extruded sections and aluminum panels, accounts for just 214 kg of the total weight.

The engine frame is made of magnesium and the long cover over the soft-top compartment and the large side panels at the rear are made of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer. CFRP is also used for the modified front spoiler, the fixed rear spoiler and the new rear bumper. Together, all these saved 5.5 kg.

Inside, the bucket seats alone, with their chassis of glass fiber-reinforced polymer, saved 31.5 kg. As to not waste their efforts, I’d skip that banana leaf lunch if I was driving one of these!

The fabric soft top with its electrohydraulic drive transforms the car in 19 seconds, at speeds of up to 50 km/h. The extendible glass rear window is nestled in the bulkhead, separate from the soft top. Integrated in the bulkhead is a rollover protection system comprising two pretensioned plates.

The quattro permanent AWD has a strong rear-wheel bias, granted by the axle load distribution. If the situation calls for it, the system sends additional torque to the front axle. The gearbox is an automated six-speed R tronic transmission.

The interior is black and can be had with titanium gray or crimson stitching. Alcantara is found on the sport steering wheel and windshield frame. Unique details to look out for include white dials and R8 GT logos. The distinctive R8 “monoposto,” a large arch encircling the driver’s cockpit, is made of matt CFRP.

Audi showed off an e-tron prototype in the form of an R8 during the Le Mans race this year. Racing legend Frank Biela took the e-tron out for a spin in the Le Mans vers le futur demo event for EVs.

The R8 e-tron is powered by four motors connected to a wheel each for quattro grip. Combined, they provide 313 hp and 4500 Nm of torque (no it’s no a typo), propelling the two-seater from 0-100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. 70% of power goes to the rear wheels while the rest goes to the fronts. The battery sits behind the passenger cabin for a 42:58 weight distribution.

Torque vectoring from the four motors mean that understeer and oversteer can be corrected by not only targeted activation of the brakes, but also by precise increases in power by few milliseconds. The R8 e-tron is claimed to remain extremely neutral even under great lateral acceleration, “hustling through corners as if on the proverbial rails” according to Audi.

The car’s lithium-ion battery can be charged from a household plug socket (230 volts/16 amperes), taking six to eight hours to be refilled. Kinetic energy from the brakes is recuperated, channelled to the alternator and converted into electrical energy.

Audi R8 GT

Audi has lifted the covers off a more powerful, lighter and faster special edition version of its mid-engined supercar called the R8 GT. When I say lighter, I mean a whooping 100 kg lighter.

How did the guys at Ingolstadt did it you ask...do note that the standard R8 V10 is not a heavy car at 1,625 kg, thanks to its aluminum space frame body, so Audi has worked hard to shave the grams here. The GT’s windshield is made of thinner glass; the bulkhead between the passenger cell and engine compartment, as well as the rear hatch window are made of polycarbonate. These three items alone saved 9 kg. Other measures include a fixed rear wing (1.2 kg), thinner sheet metal and additional cutouts from the aluminum front hatch (2.6 kg) and a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) rear hatch (6.6 kg). The rear bumpers and sideblades are also made from CFRP.

Audi’s 5.2-litre direct injection V10 engine makes 560 bhp and 540 Nm here, thanks to tweaks to the electronics. The hand built engine is paired to a six-speed dual clutch gearbox and power is goes to all wheels via Audi’s quattro AWD. The system sends 15% of power to the front axle and 85% to the rear in normal driving. Audi says that this ratio goes well with the R8 GT’s 43:57 weight distribution.

All this effort results in the Audi R8 GT having making the century sprint in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 320 km/h or 199mph. It will be produced in a strictly limited number of 333 units with prices in Germany set at €193,000, or about US$256,500 at today's exchange rates.

4.2 FSI V8 Engine

The questions are legitimate and short: A Street-legal Audi R8 with rear wheel drive? And with a 560 HP supercharged engine? The answer is also short. Yes it exists! It is call the
MTM Audi R8 GT3-2 Packing 560 horsepower (412 kW) and rear-wheel-drive, the supercharged 4.2 FSI V8 puts down 580 Nm (428 lb-ft) of torque to help it pop 100 km/h (62 mph) in around 3.9 seconds. Top speed arrives at a claimed 317 km/h (197 mph).
The Audi R8 GT3-2 ditches all-wheel drive for rear-wheel drive. Elsewhere, the company installed a differential lock, an adjustable sports suspension, an improved braking system, aerodynamic carbon fiber body parts (front spoiler, side skirts and rear wing), and 20-inch forged wheels with Dunlop Sport Maxx GT (or Michelin Cup Sport) tires.
